College Football New Head Coaches Preview: Billy Napier, Louisiana

Billy Napier, Louisiana
Napier is young, and at 39, is taking on his first head coaching gig. Although he is young, he has some experience working with the top coaches in the game, including Nick Saban at Alabama. He worked for Todd Graham as OC/QB coach at Arizona State last season, and was the WR coach for Saban at Alabama from 2013-16, and also served as an analyst under Jim McElwain at Alabama in 2011 before following McElwain from Alabama to Colorado State to work as Assistant Head Coach/QB coach at Colorado State in 2012. From 2006-08, he worked at Clemson as TE coach and recruiting coordinator, and then moved up to OC/QB coach in 2009-10. He served as QB coach at South Carolina State in 2005 after serving 2003-04 as a GA, also at Clemson.
Napier has a solid resume working with some of the best in the game. He now gets a shot to show what he has learned in that time in his first shot at being a head coach at Louisiana, which has had some success over the years, but fell stagnant recently. With his mental approach to offense, and his overall program experience, he should do well here before moving on to a higher profile job in a couple of years.
Louisiana opens the season against Grambling this Saturday. A win should be in order.
