As Drama at East Carolina, Charlotte: As the Coaching Carousel Turns Vol. 5

More news comes at us today on the East Carolina and Charlotte front, as it appears both suitors want the same coach. Other news today involves Louisville, Texas Tech, Purdue, and North Carolina. Here we go...

East Carolina/Charlotte
It appears that both programs are interested in the same guy, and after Charlotte reported that they had indeed hired Mike Houston of James Madison, it was Houston himself that issued the "not so fast" statement, saying that he had indeed spoken with Charlotte, and had expressed interest, and even that an offer was made, he stated that he had not gone all in on accepting the offer just yet. James Madison is till in the FCS playoffs, but that may not be the issue here.
East Carolina officially fired Scottie Montgomery today, as expected. It appears that Houston may have stiff armed Charlotte because he knew that the ECU job was opening, and that was the job he was really coveting. We now have a stalemate, and still no AD in charge at ECU after a closed door meeting to discuss Montgomery and the AD job yesterday with the board of regents. This is going to get nuts in the coming days, so stay tuned on these two jobs.

Louisville/Purdue
Jeff Brohm did what I and others had been saying he would do all along...he jilted a strong pursuit by Louisville to remain at Purdue for a nice increase for him and his staff. Purdue fans should be lit up after this occurrence, as this is a commitment to the future of that program that we have not seen since the Joe Tiller era.
Louisville has now been downgraded as a long term job in the ACC. This was always likely to happen, but here we are at a stark reality for that program. It is a total rebuild in a conference where, because of massive instability in the last year, the job may not be the best available in its own league.
Vince Tyra has now refocused the search, and started doing so last night. The top candidates are now Scott Satterfield and Neal Brown, which are solid candidates, but either candidate has a massive mountain to move as far as rebuilding the program, one that under achieved even at its height.

Texas Tech
It appears that there is a front runner in sight for Kirby Hocutt, and that would be Utah State's Matt Wells. Tech is not exactly a top tier gig in the Big 12, and Wells has won in a similar situation at Utah State, and that is an attractive feature for Hocutt at Tech.
It was said that Seth Littrell of North Texas would be interviewing today, but that report proved false, as all eyes are on Wells. If Wells is the guy, expect it to happen in short order, as in the next 24 to 48 hours of this report.

North Carolina
If it were not already bizarre enough with the hiring of Mack Brown, the staffing situation took another laughable turn when Brown hired Greg Robinson today. It is a report that such has happened, and you can expect an official release on this shortly. Dre Bly will also apparently coach the corners.
Robinson has not been a successful coordinator or coach in well over a decade, so the wisdom of this hire is reflected only by the lack of wisdom in hitting the retread barrel to hire a 67 year old Mack Brown.

UNLV
Nobody really needed this announcement, but Desiree Francois-Reed, the AD at UNLV, as announced, officially, that Tony Sanchez will be back. I am sure it was a painful admission for her, as she has never been a fan.
The expectation is that it is bowl or bust in 2019 for Sanchez here. Again, this is not exactly new news for anyone who knows what is going on at UNLV, one of the most dysfunctional places going.

Georgia Tech
There are two schools of thought at Georgia Tech in replacing Paul Johnson, who will retire after the bowl game. One school is to stick with the triple option, and the other is to scrap it and get more modern in terms of offensive philosophy.
There are two very different lists of candidates for those options. The option list is limited to option coaches, who include Jeff Monken of Army, Ken Niumatalolo of Navy, Chad Lunsford of Georgia Tech, and Brian Bohannon of Kennesaw State.
Option two is a wider range, including Neal Brown of Troy, former NFL head coach Ken Whisenhunt, Clemson Co-OC Tony Elliott, and App State's Scott Satterfield.
Expect this job to heat up in the coming days, but make no mistake about the national reports of this being a "great job". This is not one of the better openings in major college football, and Tech is always a mid-tier job in the ACC.

Tennessee
The search to replace Tyson Helton as OC has moved along quickly here, as two candidates appear on top of every report in Chip Lindsey at Auburn and Eli Drinkwitz of NC State. Expect a hire to be made early next week.

Kansas State
AD Gene Taylor has told the paper in Manhattan that he has not spoken with anyone specifically as a candidate to replace Bill Snyder. We probably all know that is not a truth.
Stay tuned...

Stephen F. Austin
Former NFL Safety Van Malone has interviewed to replace Clint Conque at SFA. Other interviews are still pending.

Jackson State
John Henderick, who served as interim when Tony Hughes was fired in season, has had the tag removed, and he will be the permanent head coach for 2019.

Arkansas State Confirmed for Arizona Bowl

ARKANSAS STATE IS HEADING TO THE DESERT TO PLAY
IN THE NOVA HOME LOANS ARIZONA BOWL

TUCSON, Az. (Nov. 27, 2018) – Tucson’s football festival is getting off to a fast start in 2018. The NOVA Home Loans is proud to announce our participant out of the Sun Belt Conference, the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

Kym Adair, Executive Director of the NOVA Home Loan Arizona Bowl said, “We are thrilled to welcome Arkansas State and the Red Wolves family to Tucson, Arizona to compete in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. Arkansas State’s rich tradition of playing football at the highest level is evidenced by their eight consecutive bowl game appearances. We look forward to sharing our Tucson hospitality and beautiful warm, winter weather with the teams and fans of Arkansas State on December 29th.”

The Red Wolves (8-4, 5-3 Sun Belt), in their first NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl appearance, are slated to take on a team from the Mountain West Conference in the fourth edition of the bowl game held at the University of Arizona Stadium in Tucson.
“The NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl is an excellent postseason destination for Arkansas State,” said Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson.  “In just three years, the bowl game has taken off and been warmly embraced by the city of Tucson.  The Red Wolves are guaranteed a tremendous time and we are happy to make this announcement today to give extra planning time to the fans, student-athletes and athletic department.”

Arkansas State is making its eighth consecutive and ninth overall bowl appearance as a NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision program. The Red Wolves have won three bowl games with their last win coming in a 31-13 victory over UCF in the 2016 AutoNation Cure Bowl.

As the Coaching Carousel Turns: 2018 Vol. 4 UPDATE

The last few moments have been quite busy on the Carousel, as two jobs have suddenly been filled.

Texas State
As I mentioned when posting Vol. 4 moments ago, Jake Spavital was a candidate at Texas State, and he has now accepted the job. The announcement will likely be made official this afternoon with a press conference to follow tomorrow.

Charlotte
One of the hottest names in coaching circles over the last 2 seasons has found a new home. James Madison coach Mike Houston is the new football coach at Charlotte, landing the spot over 5 other candidates that were being considered at any given time. He should be a solid fit at Charlotte, and will have strong recruiting ties in the area after time at JMU and at The Citadel prior.

AS the Coaching Carousel Turns: 2018 Vol. 4

There are already some updates this morning with the coaching carousel for college football, so let us get right to the meet of the information:

Louisville
Jeff Brohm and Vince Tyra met one final time yesterday, and we still have no idea what transpired there. What I will say is that if a deal were struck, we likely would know it by now, as Louisville would be in a hurry to get that name out there. I would have to, after crunching the possibilities, say that no deal is in place at this time, and that the deadline for a decision has come and gone. Stay tuned for more word here later today...

Auburn
Gus Malzahn is working on massively restructuring his deal at Auburn to stay on as head coach, and the deal includes a serious scale down of his buyout, which was one of the worst deals in sports for the administration. Stay tuned here, as if talks break down, things could go sideways again.

Kansas
Quick note from the Dallas Morning News...Les Miles had been in talks with Texas-Arlington about restarting football there earlier this year, but the deal could not be sealed, leading Miles to get back on the market again.

Bowling Green
After all signs pointed to Brian Polian's second meeting as being a strong indicator for him getting the job, the Falcons unveiled their mystery candidate today by hiring Scott Loeffler, the OC at Boston College, as their new football coach. It is an interesting choice with no real ties, other than he played QB at Michigan. He has not coached in the MAC since 2000-01 when he was the QB coach at Central Michigan. He has been an OC since 2011, serving stints at Temple, Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Boston College, which is quite a bit of movement in a 7 year span. He has served on the Michigan staff in 2 stints, and has also worked at Florida and with the Detroit Lions. Other than being a grad assistant at Michigan, he served as QB coach in every other spot, including his second stop in Ann Arbor.

Texas State
Quick retraction, as I stated that Kendal Briles was OC at FAU currently. He is not, as he is at Houston in 2018.
Now to the meat of the story...Briles will not be accepting the head coaching job at Texas State, as he has agreed to an extension at Houston as OC, as the Cougars put on a full court press to keep him.
Names here have switched to Phil Longo, OC at Ole Miss, Jake Spavital, OC at West Virginia, and Sterlin Gilbert, OC at USF. Gilbert may be a smoke screen, as he may very well be fired at USF after a total collapse of the offense in a 5 game losing streak to close the season for the Bulls. Longo has worked in state at Sam Houston State, and Spavital has a deep history in the state as well.

Georgia Tech
Paul Johnson is retiring, according to Jeff Schultz of the Athletic. He has been coach since 2008. Will update this job as soon as we have word of a candidate list.

Tulsa
No shock here, but Phillip Montgomery is coming back for the 2019 season, and will have 2 years remaining on his current deal.

Iowa State
Matt Campbell is adamant that he will return to the Cyclones in 2019. I would say that it is far to early to buy in on that statement 100%, but it is a possibility that he is serious.

Western Kentucky
Tyson Helton will make $800,000 per season at WKU, and his buyout was waived at Tennessee. He has named Brian Ellis as his OC thus far. Ellis was hired off of Helton's brother's staff at USC.

East Carolina
The board of regents will meet today in a closed door session to discuss the firing of Scottie Montgomery as head football coach, and to hire an AD, which sources tell me is narrowed down to Rick Hart of SMU, and John Gilbert of Southern Miss, with Gilbert being the favorite. The AD job has been open since March, and Dave Hart, former Tennessee AD, is on as a special consultant. Rick Hart is his son. Stay tuned as we should have more info later today...

Nothing new on the following fronts since the audio blog yesterday: Colorado, Texas Tech, U Mass, Central Michigan, Charlotte

FCS Updates

Texas Southern
Mike Haywood is out at Texas Southern, and Clarence McKinney, Kevin Sumlin's right hand man at Arizona and Houston, is the prime target here. He has plenty of experience in the area, and would be a perfect fit, if they can work out the money.

Stephen F. Austin
A couple of favorites have emerged here, as Colby Carthel, head coach at Texas A&M Commerce, could very well be a top pick. He has been head coach since 2013, owns a D2 national title, and won 10 games this season. He is the son of D2 coaching legend Don Carthel.
Scotty Waldon, WR Coach at Southern Miss, is also a top flight candidate after successful stints at East Texas Baptist and Sul Ross. Jeff Traylor of Arkansas and Joshua Eargle of Austin Peay are also mentioned as fall back plans.

As the Coaching Carousel Turns: 2018 Vol. 2

The end of the full schedule of college football ended this weekend, and the opening salvos of the coaching carousel for 2018 have been full of strange activity and curve balls, and in some cases, some of the moves have proved to defy explanation. I will break this down into 3 categories this week, with category one being that the jobs are open, category two being that the coach is now announced to be coming back, and category three will represent jobs that were expected to come open, but have not yet, and nor has an explanation been offered whether or not a move is under consideration or not.

Category One-The Open Jobs

Central Michigan
As was expected, John Bonamego has been let go, and rumors are swirling that we will return to his old job as special teams coordinator with the Detroit Lions. There has been little in the way of buzz at CMU to this point, and we are working to figure out what the candidates are going to look like moving forward.

Louisville
Jeff Brohm appears to have no interest in coming back to the drama club that is Louisville, and it appears as if the administration and AD Vince Tyra have moved on to other candidates. It appears that option B fell through as well with Charlie Strong returning. Option C now seems to be settling in on Missouri's Barry Odom, and it appears that the interest here is mutual as of today. Stay tuned on this one, as it could move fairly quickly from here.

Texas State
All indications are that Kendall Briles, the OC at FAU, is very interested in coming back to Texas and taking over the Bobcats program. He appears to be the only candidate being focused on here, and this, again, could move quickly in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Bowling Green
While no official announcements have been made, expect former Nevada head coach Brian Polian to land this job in the coming hours. He was the only known candidate to receiver a second meeting with the school, and this, too, could be a done deal in short order.

North Carolina
As I reported a couple of weeks back, Larry Fedora is officially fired at UNC. Where we did not see this job going is in the insane arc of bringing back Mac Brown, which in our opinion, is a huge mistake. Brown has not been a strong coach in over a decade, and his age works against him. Most felt that this job would go to one of a trio of coaches in Seth Littrell, Neal Brown, or Scott Satterfield of Appalachian State Satterfield stated on the Sun Belt call today that North Carolina never reached out to him in any capacity. Strange.

Kansas
We all know that Les Miles has the job now and is working on a staff. As soon as we have word on who he is bringing in, we will announce it here.

Western Kentucky
As I had reported 2 weeks ago, Mike Sanford, Jr. is now out of a job at Western Kentucky after largely derailing the program. It is being reported today that the job has already been filled by Tyson Helton, the OC at Tennessee, as he has worked at WKU before. Helton will likely re-install the old offense that Sanford foolishly removed, and success should return in short order.

U Mass
Mark Whipple is officially out as head coach of the Minutemen. A search is underway, but believe me, top tier candidates will not be lining up for this job. More info on the audio blog tomorrow,

Colorado
The Buffs should soon be speaking with candidates to fill this job, as Jim Leavitt is considered to be a guy that the Buffs would love to speak with. They are also looking at some outside the box scenarios as well, including Dana Holgorsen, if he believes that he has done all he can at WVU after losing to Oklahoma this weekend. Stay tuned here.

Texas Tech
As I reported last week, Kliff Kingsbury failed to  get to a bowl, and he is out as head coach of the Red Raiders. The administration immediately zeroed in on Brent Venables of Texas Tech, but he has little interest in the job, and would seem to prefer to stay at Clemson to coach his son, a freshman LB on the team.
I was messaged this morning about rumors regarding Mike Leach 2.0 in Lubbock, and to use Kirby Hocutt's words to address this, Leach will not be, under any circumstances, a candidate for this job. I think we can officially put that to rest.
Seth Littrell, with North Carolina closed off to him, and Neal Brown could bery well be targets worth watching here.

Category 2-Returning Next Season

Chris Ash, Rutgers...Coming back with high expectations for 2019.

Mike Bobo, Colorado State...Despite never having won more than 7 in a season, and tanking this season, he is still back for 2019.

Lovie Smith, Illinois...Say what you will, the talk of him developing the program is a joke, and everyone knows it. Illinois is taking the cheap route here for a lower buyout in 2019.

Mike Neu, Ball State...Neu is returning, despite losing 4 of his final 5 games this season. Again, another program looking for a cheaper buyout next year.

Tony Sanchez, UNLV...There has been no official word yet, but I don't expect one. There is a power struggle going on here, and the money folks won. He has not produced a winning season or bowl in 4 years, and usually, that would not buy the loyalty of the donors/boosters. It's a weird situation.

Bobby Wilder, Old Dominion...He is the only coach the program has ever had, and he is getting the benefit of the doubt for one more season.

Clay Helton, USC...This involved another power struggle, and Lynn Swann committed career suicide by going rogue to keep Helton. The boosters/donors/former players are infuriated over the decision, so Swann has now married his career to that of Helton. Never the smart play, but as crazy as this sounds, I applaud the move.

Category 3-Jobs Expected to Open, But Have Not

Bob Davie, New Mexico...According to his contract, the buyout portion of his contract either way has gone away. He is free to be fired at this point, so it makes no sense, with his own off-field drama, and player behavior issues off-field, plus a bad W/L record, to have not fired him as of yet.

Scottie Montgomery, East Carolina...Montgomery needs to go. He has lost all of his support base, and everyone who I talk to assumed he would have already been shown the door. Still, he remains, for now, with no official explanation as to what to expect. It makes no sense at this point to keep him, and doing so could damage the reputation of the program for years. There is some front office drama going on, as ECU has had some issues locking in a permanent AD, and an interim may not be allowed to pull the trigger themselves.

Bill Snyder, Kansas State...We expected his retirement announcement sometime around the Iowa State game, but K State won the game and will now go bowling. With Snyder's ego what it is, he will likely hold off on an announcement now until after the bowl game.

Matt Canada, Maryland...He is only the interim as of now, so it makes no sense that Maryland has not announced his status just yet. Again, we have yet another power struggle ongoing, as there are some who want to retain him, and others pushing for an external hire.

Gary Patterson, TCU...He refuted rumors of his retirement. I know him to be an open and honest guy so I do not see him going back on that. I expect him to return in 2019.

Derek Mason, Vanderbilt...There are stories circulating that even if he is offered an extension, he may not take one, and would be interested in moving on. One such targeted job for him did not open this week, and I will leave it at that. Vandy is going bowling after beating Tennessee last weekend.

Kilani Sitake, BYU...BYU will be going to a bowl, and it appears that he may be safe for now. We shall see what happens should the Cougars lose said bowl game.

Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State...The Cowboys will be in a bowl at 6-6, but if he loses, he could still be a target for a firing. I have heard that parties are highly split inside the walls.

Jeff Brohm, Purdue...A couple of weeks ago, a lot of people assumed that Brohm would be gone for Louisville. That is not happening. Look for a nice extension announcement shortly.

Matt Campbell, Iowa State...He is on the radar for several NFL jobs right now, so expect him to be getting a ton of buzz on that side of the coin, based on the fact that several higher profile college jobs have not materialized as of yet.

Barry Odom, Missouri
With his interest in the Louisville job, early indicators are that the Tigers could see themselves into the Neal Brown/Seth Littrell hunt. Matt Wells could be a candidate here as well, as could current UCF coach Josh Heupel, and Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell.

Late Development

Gus Malzahn, Auburn...Despite assurances from the AD that Malzahn would return in 2019, the power brokers are coming together with buyout cash anyway, and have spoken to a very high profile candidate that is at least listening. According to multiple sources, that potential candidate could actually be Bob Stoops...stay tuned on this one, as it is far from over.
