Big 12
Still In the Hunt: Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas Tech
Elimination Mode: Baylor, Iowa State, TCU, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Kansas
For those of you who thought that Texas would make a run this season, kudos to you. The Longhorns have a huge win over Oklahoma, and survived a major letdown by scraping by Baylor this past weekend for a 23-17 win, and now Texas controls their own destiny moving forward, and if it's Oklahoma that is on their heels at the end, Texas could even afford one loss, and still win the league regular season title. It gets even better when you look at the schedule and see that the Horns should be favored in each of their final 5 games of the season.
West Virginia got bit by the Iowa State bug that Oklahoma State knows all too well last weekend, and the Mountaineers no longer control things in the Big 12. What a difference a week can make. Still, WVU can get to the Big 12 title game by winning out, but the end of season schedule, much like last season, is a grinder. Texas and Oklahoma both remain on the schedule, and there will be tests against Baylor and TCU as well along the way.
Oklahoma made a move on defense at the coordinator spot, and they now have to get in motion, as another loss would all but eliminate the Sooners in the Big 12 title chase. Obviously, the Sooners need Texas to lose twice now, and that may be asking for something to get the top seed in the conference title game. The Sooners should be favored in all but one of their remaining games, and that one game may be against West Virginia, depending on what WVU does from here out. The loss to Texas hurt, but all was not lost.
Who would have seen Texas Tech still being in a spot to earn a conference title game spot at this point of the season? The Red Raiders are hanging around, but remember, they already have a loss to West Virginia on the docket, and will need some help with the field against the Mountaineers moving forward to get them out of the way. The Red Raiders should cruise against Kansas this week, but then Iowa State comes the week after, followed by Oklahoma, and then Texas. The Red Raiders, by the math, have the longest odds of any team here.
