Coaches on the Hot Seat: Week 2

With week 3 upon us, it's time to update our status on coaches who are sitting on a toasty apparatus heading into that slate of week 3 games. Some changes are certainly in store!

Geoff Collins, Temple: Lost to Buffalo to drop to 0-2 on the season, and blew a real chance to win the game in the process. Keep an eye on this situation.

Randy Edsell, U Conn: Lost to Boise State in humiliating fashion, allowing 818 yards in a 62-7 loss. His stock is a complete loss right now.

Dino Babers, Syracuse: Has wins over Western Michigan and now Wagner, but in short, even at 2-0, the Orange have not played anyone. That ends this week against Florida State. A bad loss here could send the Orange tumbling. A win here, and he gets a reprieve.

Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech: The loss to USF was tough to watch, which most Paul Johnson losses are. Tech really needs to consider making a change after the season.

Larry Fedora, North Carolina: He is a banana peel away from splashing into the Dead Pool. UNC has the money to buy him out, and don't let anyone tell you differently. A loss to East Carolina last week was a program low, and Fedora is losing just about everyone.

Tom Herman, Texas: Are you better off in Austin with Herman than you were with Charlie Strong? Nobody can answer yes with a straight face after an escape win over Tulsa when the Horns were 22 point favorites.

Brad Lambert, Charlotte: The 49ers won last night in conference play against Old Dominion, but that loss against Appalachian State last weekend was more telling.

Mike Sanford, Western Kentucky: Sanford has managed to make Hilltopper football boring again, oh, and they lost to Maine last weekend. Nothing is going right with this hire.

Doug Martin, New Mexico State: That contract extension that he got after last season was a stupid, knee jerk mistake. The Aggies are abysmal again at 0-3, with a 60-13 loss to Utah State, who they beat in their bowl game in December. Can't defend this guy right now.

Chuck Martin, Miami (Ohio): He landed back on the seat with a loss to Marshall to open the season, and then the offense folded up last week against Cincinnati in a 21-0 loss to go 0-2. Dead Pool is getting closer.

Bob Davie, New Mexico: He has no extension, and his deal ends after the season. So does his coaching career. Closer to the pool every day.

Tony Sanchez, UNLV: Rebels beat UTEP 52-24 last weekend, and there have been signs to look at showing improvement across the board. Will have a test against Praire View this week and at Arkansas State next week. A 3-1 start gets him off the list.

Brian Brennan, San Jose State: I am being kind by keeping him on the seat and not throwing him to the pool. We all know what will eventually happen here. Losses to UC-Davis and Washington State bode ill for his future.

Mike Bobo, Colorado State: The win over Arkansas was nice last week, and it got the Rams out of a funk, but they cannot be expected to do that to Florida on the road this week. A 1-3 start is probable.

New Kids on the Seat This Week

Phillip Montgomery, Tulsa: He took a pay cut to help balance the department budget over the Summer. That may make him easier to buy out. They did get close to beating Texas last week, but things don't look good here.

Mark Dantonio, Michigan State: Dantonio replaces Harbaugh this week. Sparty has some serious issues after a loss to Arizona State and a near loss to Utah State in the opener, and with all of the off-field issues he has had, it may be a thing to look at as people are starting to grumble.

Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee: The Blue Raiders are Malcolm in the Middle under Stockstill, and in a winnable conference such as CUSA, it's no longer cool to be in the middle. It's time to start winning, or get rid of a stale guy who has been there too long.

Bobby Wilder, Old Dominion: The Monarchs have been blasted by Liberty, lost to FIU, and then lost to freaking Charlotte last night. Wilder's team has been trending in the wrong direction for 2 years now. It's time to put him on notice.

Mark Whipple, U Mass: After showing promise late in 2017, the Minutemen are trending way down again after a 1-2 start. His first run in Amherst was magic. His second, not so much.

Rod Carey, Northern Illinois: Husky fan has always been on the verge of storming the gate for his head, especially over the last 3 years, but after a tough 0-2 start with losses to Iowa and Utah, those gates are looking rickety again.

Troy Calhoun, Air Force: Speaking of irrelevant programs, Calhoun has not had the Falcons in Mountain West contention in some time. The program is stuck in a haze, and it may be time to consider infusing new life into this program.

Clay Helton, USC: Helton is always on the edge of being turned on, and here we are again after a largely lifeless effort in a win over UNLV, and a loss to Stanford. A loss to Texas in Austin this week may have Trojan fan ready for a riot.
