There was one very interesting finding in these rankings, regarding the top 4. Ohio State finished ranked 4th, just one single point ahead of Notre Dame, who finished 5th. I have been a huge advocate of Notre Dame being in the playoff, where they received the 3rd overall spot over the weekend. I personally value the undefeated season, which is why I would have slotted Notre Dame in over the Buckeyes in this particular case, but now based on the final PRS rankings, maybe I could be mistaken, but the separation is beyond razor thin, and the two are almost indistinguishable from one another.
In this particular ranking, Oklahoma finished 3rd, whereas the committee ranked them 4th. In our scenario, Alabama would have played Ohio State, and Clemson would have played Oklahoma in the opening round, with Notre Dame likely headed to the Rose Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. There was also an opportunity, by our numbers, to have Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, as they are a plug and play piece for any of the NY6 bowls.
UCF, who finished undefeated once again, and won our 2017 national championship, finished 6th for the regular season, and would be due to move up a couple of spots. What cost UCF in the rankings here was the loss of their 12th regular season game, which had not been rescheduled. We very well could have seen a top 4 ranking for the Knights had that game been played. Of course in these rankings, if you do not play, you do not get the credit.
Georgia, who many, especially in the South, argued for including the Bulldogs into the playoffs even after their Alabama loss (and an earlier loss to LSU by 20), finished 7th. I had tweeted out all weekend, and into the week, that there would be no equation showing an argument for Georgia getting in, and this shows it in plain text, that Georgia should not have been considered, especially as a 2 loss team that had no won an available conference title. Inclusion would have been an argument with no defense with Oklahoma and Ohio State as one loss conference champs, and Notre Dame and UCF both sitting at 12-0.
Our rankings have always been fair to G5 programs, as we do not designate P5 and G5, only FBS as a total. In spirit of that belief, Fresno State finished ranked 8th, with Utah State finishing at 9th after spending a chunk of the season in the top 10. Michigan, who missed out on the Big 10 title game after a loss to Ohio State, finished 10th.
