Chad Lunsford, Georgia Southern
Lunsford was promoted as interim head coach half way through the 2017 football season when Tyson Summers was fired from a job that, in hindsight, he never really was qualified for. The Eagles were winless when Lunsford was promoted, and he finished the season 2-4, which was respectable, being what the Eagles had been to that point.
He had the support from his players, and from the administration, and so the expectations are that he will have what it takes to get the job done, even though he was part of the staff that could not get it done before.
This is his first head coaching job, as he has been a college assistant with stops at Appalchian State, Griffin High School, Georgia Military, and Georgia Southern.
Currently, this is his second stop at GSU, as he was an assistant there from 2003-2005 as a slot back coach. His current stint began in 2013.
Georgia Southern opens the season at home this week against South Carolina State.
