Week 7 Games of the Week and Picks

Week 7 Games of the Week

What should be the first separation Saturday of the season is seemingly upon us as we head into the second half of the 2015 college football season. There are several huge tilts coming up that should set apart contenders from the pretenders as we head into the stretch run. Here are the most meaningful games being played this week:

PRS #23 Penn State at PRS #1 Ohio State
We’ve all seen the Buckeyes struggle to win games that they should have had no trouble winning this season, but somehow they have trudged on and earned enough points to move up to #1 in our rankings. Things seemed to settle into place last week after moving back to a 2 QB system, but they still struggled against Maryland before pulling away. Penn State has hardly been a measure of offensive stability this season, but Christian Hackenburg finally had a breakout game against Indiana last week, one week after IU gave the Buckeyes fits in Bloomington. Penn State has largely been winning on defensive prowess, and they have just enough skill to severely test the limits of an underperforming Buckeye team this week.
Pick: Ohio State…Buckeyes still should have enough athletes to get the job done, but it could be tight.

PRS #2 Florida at PRS #8 LSU
The Gators picked the wrong week to lose Will Grier to suspension for PEDs. The Tigers are basically a one dimensional team, but the Gators now become the same kind of team in that they will find it tough going throwing the football without Grier. If Florida can stop Leonard Fournette to any degree, and force LSU to throw more than they are comfortable doing, they would have a shot. If they let Fournette run wild, it could be a long day and a 1st loss for the Gators.
Pick: LSU…Fournette is enough to worry about, but this game is at Tiger Stadium, which is the edge here.

PRS #4 Michigan State at PRS #19 Michigan
Michigan hasn’t seemingly given up any points in forever, but this would be the most interesting test that the Wolverine defense has had all season. This is the first time in forever that this game is relevant in the Big 10 race, but it’s for a ton of the marbles in the East, not all the marbles, but a bunch. The Spartans offense runs like an NFL unit, but the team as a whole has not stepped up and dominated like they should at any point, and Sparty has yet to play what I would consider a complete game. Michigan is fired up about this game, and that defense is sterling enough to allow a young offense to develop. It’ll really all come down to which defense wants it more.
Pick: Michigan…the Wolverines have all the momentum coming in, and they want this one badly.

PRS #16 Alabama at PRS #9 Texas A&M
The Aggies held the top spot in our PRS rankings for weeks, but when you take a bye week, you don’t accrue points, so as does happen, they dropped a bit. I am not entirely sold on the Aggies, even though they have played some strong football to date. This will be their toughest test to date, and Alabama seems to be back on track after that slip with Ole Miss. If the Tide offense can do just enough, they may have a serious shot at the road win here.
Pick: Alabama…Aggies haven’t met this kind of challenge yet, and it may be overwhelming to the offense.

PRS #22 Ole Miss at PRS #15 Memphis
This, by far, will be the toughest test on the season for a soaring Memphis Tiger football team. Ole Miss has been feasting on mid major cupcakes for weeks now, but this isn’t some G5 cupcake party that the Rebels will be attending. Memphis can get after it and move the football, but do the Tigers have the athletes to go punch for punch with the Rebels right now?
Pick: Ole Miss…Rebels should have just a bit too much firepower for a very good Memphis team to survive.

Ranked PRS Teams Idle This Week: #6 Oklahoma State, #24 California, #25T Duke

FCS Top Games

PRS #7 McNeese State at PRS #22 Central Arkansas
McNeese State has been a huge surprise in the Southland race this season, but they get a major in conference test this weekend as the Cowboys travel to face the Bears of Central Arkansas. UCA is just hitting their stride and moving forward in 2015, and it may be just at the right time. They will have to be on their A game this week to take down the surging Cowboys.
Pick: McNeese State…The Cowboys unbeaten streak continues for another week and stay atop the SLC.

PRS #10 Grambling at PRS #16 Alcorn State
The Tigers are the comeback team of the year in the SWAC, but Alcorn State is flying high on offense. Grambling’s defense has not put together a solid 4 quarter effort against like competition this season, and the Braves may be able to punch holes there.
Pick: Alcorn State…Braves may have enough offense, but will find themselves in a shootout at home.

PRS #25 Prairie View at PRS #18 Southern
It’s another classic showdown in the SWAC this weekend, as divisional standings once again come into play between two of four solid powers in the conference as the Jaguars host the Panthers in what should be an exhibition of offensive fireworks. Prairie View’s defense will have to find a way to stop Southern, as they failed to so against Grambling.
Pick: Southern…The better of the two defenses should get this win
